Residential Locksmith
After purchasing a home not many new home owners are aware of changing locks or that the service is available without purchasing new hardware.
Key changes are recommended especially in new constructions the contractors have a master key in other words one key opens all the homes in the community. Another form for contractors convenience is a builders key which works like a master key but when the new key is used it drops tiny ball bearings preventing the builders key to work in the lock this method does not always automatically block the contractors key.
Seasonal Home Owners
Seasonal home owners usually have services rendered to their properties while away. Do they know who has their key? Services like home watch, maids, plumbers, maintenance, electricians, realtors and the list goes on. So many that one looses track to who has a key and who has not. Here again for the sake of the home owner as well as the service companies it is a good idea to change the locks and the service companies are released from any possible liabilities.
If you have never changed you keys it’s time to change them. It is a good idea to change your old key not the locks. Changing your keys is accomplished by changing the pins in the lock cylinder saving the cost of new hardware.
PRO Locksmith Tip
Another great tip is to lubricate your locks and door hardware every six months. This slows down climate corrosion avoiding broken keys and extends the life of your locks. Key holes, latches, bolts, hinges should be lubricated. Doors also shift making it difficult to lock or unlock this is remedied by adjusting the strike plate before doing this, check that the hinge screws are tight and that the door is not loose.
Dead Bolts
Dead bolts are designed with a one inch throw into the door jam. To check if your lock is fully functional check the throw of the bolt in an open position mark the thumb turn with a washable marker. Now close the door and turn the lock if it stops in the same position as your mark the bolt throw is fine. If it did not stop in the same position then you need to adjust the strike plate.
